About Chickens

The first time I surfed Chickens it felt like the wave never wanted to end. It’s a left that builds with every section wrapping down the reef. You take off deep and if you’re not quick to your feet it’ll outrun you before you even get your line. At size the wall stretches so far it feels like the ocean’s unrolling something ancient. SE swell lights it up. NW wind grooms it perfectly. Low to mid tide is ideal. The takeoff is easy but the speed it builds will test you. Midsection throws a lip you can tuck under if you time it right. Inside gets playful and fast.

The reef is sharp but not evil if you respect it. Crowds can be thin early but it draws people when the forecast glows. I’ve shared it with strangers and had it all to myself on golden mornings. Chickens is that wave you think about long after the session ends. Long. Fast. Pure flow.

Try to stay on the wide section if the crowd is too thick on peak. Those ones are makable most of the times.

On a strong incoming current try to mark a reference point from the island or you might get swept away easily.

The quickest way to get out is not to fight the incoming waves but try and swim around it. It might be a little more paddle back to the peak but saves you from being dragged onto the dry reef.
