About Riptides
Riptides sits across the channel from Guraidhoo, breaking over a reef that doesn’t show itself until the wave starts to form. It’s a right-hander that runs around 150 meters when it’s on, with a smooth takeoff that leads into a fast, wrapping wall. The inside section can get a bit hollow, especially on a solid southeast swell with southwest wind.
Access is only by boat. Don’t even think about paddling out. The currents here are no joke. I’ve seen people try and end up drifting halfway to Maafushi. That said, the wave itself is surprisingly user-friendly. It’s got enough push to keep shortboarders happy, but it’s also cruisy enough for longboarders when the swell is smaller. It’s not the heaviest wave in the atoll, but it’s one of the more consistent ones. When everything else is blown out or flat, Riptides usually has something to offer. Just keep an eye on the tide and the current and you’ll be fine.
